Introduction
The University of Aberdeen Excellence scholarships are an annual recognition and celebration of the outstanding achievements of the students, staff, and alumni of the University of Aberdeen. These scholarships are worth up to a total of £5,000 towards the cost of tuition fees and are open to applicants from all countries outside the UK/EU who are applying to commence their studies in the 2023 academic year. These scholarships are available for students who have been offered a place in a full-time undergraduate or postgraduate program and will commence their studies in September 2022 or January 2023. The scholarship can only be used against tuition fees payable to the University. The scholarships do not cover any fees over £5,000. Students on one-year Masters degrees can only receive a maximum of £4,500 (since courses last nine months) unless they continue onto an additional 12-month master’s or Ph.D. degree at Aberdeen after that.
The University Excellence Scholarship will be awarded on a competitive basis, with final awards being made after students’ offers. Students must have achieved at least AAB (or equivalent) at A level or its equivalent before starting their course at Aberdeen, if not already resident in Scotland. They must meet English language requirements in line with current arrangements.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the Excellence Scholarship, you must:
- Be a new international student applying to commence their studies in 2022-2023.
- Have been offered a place in your program of study at the University of Aberdeen (including our partner colleges) by January 2023, and have accepted this offer.
- Meet all visa requirements for entry into the UK – you will be contacted if there’s a need for additional information or documentation before confirming your offer.
- Be from outside the UK/EU or have been resident in Scotland for less than five years before making your application. This does not apply if you apply through one of the partner colleges in Dundee or St Andrew.
The Excellence Scholarship can only be used against tuition fees payable to the University and does not cover fees over £5,000 per year (or over six years if completing an undergraduate degree in 4 years).
All on-UK/EU new international students who have applied and met the standard University entry requirements for full-time undergraduate or postgraduate programs will be considered for the scholarships.
The scholarships are open to applicants from outside the UK/EU. The scholarship can only be used against tuition fees payable to the University. Fees covering £5,000 will not qualify for an award under this scheme unless students on one-year Masters degrees continue onto an additional 12 months of study (the full fee for which may qualify), rather than just six months as is usually done with most other awards.
Terms and Conditions
- The scholarship will be for one academic year.
- It can only be used against tuition fees payable to the University.
- Scholarships do not cover fees over £5,000 per annum for a full-time student or £3,000 per annum for a part-time student.
- Under no circumstances will any part of these scholarships be paid as cash or used to support living expenses.
The maximum amount payable to a student on an MSc is £4,500 (for example: if you are commencing your course in September 2023 and studying full time over two years)
The minimum amount payable to a student on an MSc is £2,400 (for example: if you are commencing your course in September 2022 and studying full-time for over one year).
Suppose you have applied and received your offer letter from the University of Aberdeen and will be an international student, not a UK or EU citizen. In that case, you may be eligible for one of these awards, which the University has set up to support students who cannot finance their living expenses and tuition fees through financial support from their home countries or other sources such as loans or bursaries, etc.
Procedure for the Selection of the Scholarship Recipients
The selection committee will comprise senior staff from across the University. The shortlisted applicants will be invited to interview with a committee member via Skype. The scholarship offer is for two years and may be extended for an additional year if a student has not completed their degree by the end of their third year.
Interviewees will receive details of their scheduled interview date and time by email. Interviews are conducted via Skype, so if you are based overseas or do not have access to a computer connected to reliable internet services, please get in touch with us as soon as possible (enquiries@abdn.ac.uk). You will need to bring a laptop computer with a webcam enabled and an internet connection that can support video chat services such as Skype or Google Meetup.
